Relaxation Techniques

According to the Mayo Clinic, relaxation techniques can buffer stress and allow you to live a more peaceful life. They can slow your heart rate and lower your blood pressure. It increases blood flow through your whole body and reduces muscle tension. This can result in greater ability to solve problems in your daily life, fewer negative emotional responses, and more energy.

You will get the most benefit out of relaxation techniques if you practice them regularly. There are many kinds of relaxation techniques. Even a few minutes a day can improve your life. The following techniques are a form of passive relaxation:

Autogenic training usually involves 3 daily 15 minute sessions throughout the day. During the sessions you repeat a set of visualizations that induce relaxation. This can be done sitting or lying down in any position. Imagine that different parts of your body have different feelings like being heavy or cool or warm.

Biofeedback is a technique which involves using instruments to measure blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and other body functions. This will raise your awareness of these different parts of your body and keep you aware of how you may be able to control them.

Deep breathing is breathing very deeply by moving your diaphragm instead of your ribcage. This allows for greater oxygen levels and a greater amount of air to enter your lungs. This can be hard to learn how to do at the beginning since some people may not be aware of how the diaphragm works. It is the muscle the lungs use to breath located underneath the lungs.

Meditation involves encouraging yourself to turn to a deeper mental state of relaxation. It can be practiced by sitting and turning all of your attention to one thing or a single point of reference.

Progressive muscle relaxation helps relax your muscles and be aware of how peaceful your body can be. You focus on slowly tensing and relaxing every muscle group in your body. Repeating each when done can be beneficial as well.

Visualization uses the imagination to perceive something in life and imagining and "feeling" the sensory qualities of the object or situation. This is similar to daydreaming, but is extremely calming.

These are only the passive forms of relaxation. You do not need to move during these sessions, and practiced regularly, they can provide a huge sense of calming and peace in your life.

Spiders

A few days ago, my oh-so-reliable therapist finally made it back from her vacation in Italy.  Yeah, while she was out parading the streets of Venice, I was quietly sitting at home awaiting that dear womans arrival back into the United States.  Three weeks and one day is the precise amount of time she was gone for.  I couldnt even call her when I was freaking out about the spider that would not leave the same five foot radius above my bed.  Needless to say, I could not step foot into my bedroom until that dear woman came home.  It was a breath of fresh air to see her face the following Monday afternoon.  We talked about my frightening three weeks that I could not step into my own bedroom to sleep or even get anything to wear.

I am beyond terrified of spiders.  A lot of people think I make up my fear of spiders in my head, and that it is just for attention.  This I do not entirely understand.  Why is it so hard for people to accept that sometimes people are just a tad more spooked by the small things that the average human being?  Is it a crime that I have to go to a therapist every week to discuss my wide range of phobias?  If it is, I dont see why it should be.  I dont laugh in the face of someone who is depressed and is getting help.  People should be happy that I am trying to figure out some small way to get over the things that terrorize me.  I know Im happy about it, and that is all that matters.

A Little Lost

There I was again, sitting in front of the same man I have been going to since I was seventeen.  I am twenty-five.  As I stare out the window into the dark, dense forest, I can only wonder how I got myself here.  I did not think I had too many problems as a child, so why all of a sudden do I need to see a shrink every week for the past eight years of my life?  I mean, I do enjoy his company.  I find him to be a rather comforting component in my life.  Without him, I have no idea what I would do.  There is not that many people I can really confide in anyway.  In fact, most of the people in my life dont even know that I go to this one giant leather couch, every week, and sit for an hour discussing my issues with every single one of them, and myself.  I wonder what they would say.  Maybe thats another problem I have; I worry too much about what people think of me.

I guess I have always been a sort of follower.  My therapist is trying to get me to be the big leader of the pack, or at least get me to feel like Im equal with everyone else.  To be honest, I dont know if I will ever be equal to anyone surrounding me in my life.  I cant really explain why, but that is just how I feel.  I know people love me for who I am, which is the level my therapist has gotten me to now.  Hes still trying to figure out why my heart just turned into a ice box by the time I was eighteen years old.  Oh, that is what he was talking to me about.  Too bad I have stopped caring about what he has to say.  I just like his company.

Youth Turning to Alcohol

Many young teenagers these days are turning to alcohol to relieve stress. The bad habits that are developed at such a young age are what make the possibility to turn these poor kids into alcoholics as they get older. These young teenagers have the misconception that alcohol relieves their stress. Studies show that most of the kids who turn to alcohol in recent days do so because of ‘stressful’ situations in their lives. Because they feel that alcohol is a temporary source of relief, they don’t know how to control their urges to turn to alcohol. Sadly, the percentage of such cases is only increasing as the years pass.
