Freud is known for his theories regarding the unconscious mind and the defense mechanism of repression as well as the practice of psychoanalysis. Freudian theories also stretch into the realm of sexual desires as the primary force for human motivation.

He is recognized as the father of modern psychology as well as Jungian archetypes, which found commonalities in humans across cultures and lands. He tried to understand the human psyche through mythology, philosophy, religion, dreams, and art.

Abraham Harold Maslow, an American psychologist is most known for his theory on the hierarchy of human needs as well as founding humanistic psychology. In his hierarchy of needs the bottom most level is physiological needs, safety needs, needs for love and belonging, self esteem needs, and at the very top needs for self actualization.
